Haroset

Haroset by feministjulie of flickrPhoto: feministjulie of flickr

A Jewish topping that my daughter got to make as RE homework in Year 2 at primary school. Also known as Charoset. Yummy and simple.

Ingredients

  • 3 apples
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 200g ground or chopped nuts, such as almonds or hazelnuts

Method

  • Core and grate the apples. You can peel them beforehand if you really want.
  • Mix apple, nuts and cinnamon thoroughly until it becomes a reddish-brown sticky mass.
  • Serve on bread, rice cakes, soya yogurt, cereal, porridge, or anything you think it will go well with, including as a side to a main dish.

Notes

Traditionally eaten with matzah, unleavened bread crackers, which there are recipes for all over the internet.

If the apples are cooking apples you could add agave or maple syrup or fruit juice for sweetness, or some chopped dried fruit. Some versions of the recipe have chopped dried fruit in anyway, and some include a little wine, although this would stop the recipe being raw and could well stop it being vegetarian and vegan.
